Spring Break: Nicaragua Reforestation Project

This trip has closed

Our trip to Nicaragua will be our first ever international trip and a joint venture with the Engineers Without Borders at Georgia Tech. We will travel just outside of Ocotal, Nicaragua to the heart of the Savana Grande community. This area has been plagued by imprisoning economic forces which have driven desperate farmers to increase the size of their plots indiscriminately, without regard to sustainable development. As a result, the forests of Nicaragua have been rapidly shrinking. On this trip, we’ll be able to directly work to counteract this natural destruction. We’ll be transporting tree saplings from a local reforestation program to nearby communities. In addition, we’ll be partnering with a nearby school and hospital for further volunteer work. Recreationally, we’ll be doing some hiking in some of the remaining forests and have the opportunity to try something known as “volcano boarding” which involves sliding down the side of a mountain on a board. Sounds exciting right? Don’t miss Trailblazers’ first international Alternative Spring Break.
